Dr. Eng San Thian holds the position of Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the National University of Singapore. His academic journey began at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, where he obtained his Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) and Master of Engineering degrees. Dr. Thian then furthered his education at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom, culminating in the attainment of his Ph.D. degree.

Dr. Thian, who possesses expertise as a biomaterial engineer/scientist, has acquired extensive understanding in the fusion of materials science and biotechnology. His research endeavours span a wide range of areas including (but not limited to) nanobiomaterials, surface modifications, tissue engineering, and the enhancement of food security.

Dr. Thian is actively involved in cutting-edge research that tackles significant healthcare and food packaging issues on a global scale, where he secures research funding from various competitive sources. Dr. Thian has significantly advanced the biomaterials field, with a publication record of over one hundred journal papers, conference papers, and book chapters. Moreover, he contributes to the scientific community as a valued member of the editorial and reviewer board for several renowned international journals. In recognition of his exceptional contributions to the field, Dr. Thian has been honoured with the title of Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (FIMMM).
