Noteworthy comment: Diabetic retinopathy remains a challenging condition to manage. The traditional laser treatment for diabetic macular oedema is being replaced by the anti-VEGF agents and steroid implants; however, retinal laser photocoagulation remains the gold standard for proliferative diabetic retinopathy. The present review presents the current knowledge regarding the potential therapeutic effect of anti-angiogenic cytokines on diabetic retinopathy.
